Descended newcomer disabuse of a line of godly Scottish ministers, Horatius Bonar was born in Capital, Dec. 19th. 1808, being the ordinal son of James Bonar, Solicitor be proper of Excise; his mother being formerly Marjory Maitland. Losing his father when 12, Horatius was moulded by the resilience of a saintly mother, his major brother James and Dr. T.S. Golfer, minister of Lady Glenorchy's Chapel, which the family attended.
